Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification

The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) is a cybersecurity framework developed by the Department of Defense (DoD) to ensure that contractors who work with the DoD have adequate cybersecurity measures in place to protect sensitive government information. The CMMC framework consists of five levels of cybersecurity maturity, ranging from basic cyber hygiene practices to advanced cybersecurity practices.

CMMC 1.0 was the first version of the CMMC framework, which was released in January 2020. It established the basic requirements for cybersecurity maturity that contractors needed to meet in order to bid on DoD contracts. CMMC 1.0 included five levels of maturity, with each level building upon the requirements of the previous level.

In June 2021, the DoD released CMMC 2.0, which represented a significant update and expansion of the CMMC framework. CMMC 2.0 included several new features and changes, including:

1. Expanded scope: CMMC 2.0 expands the scope of the CMMC framework beyond just the protection of Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), to also include the protection of Federal Contract Information (FCI).
2. Modular structure: CMMC 2.0 introduces a modular structure, which allows contractors to be certified in specific areas of cybersecurity, rather than requiring them to be certified in all areas.
3. Streamlined assessment process: CMMC 2.0 includes a streamlined assessment process that is designed to be more efficient and less burdensome for contractors.
4. Emphasis on risk management: CMMC 2.0 places a greater emphasis on risk management and requires contractors to develop and implement a risk management plan.
5. Transition period: CMMC 2.0 includes a transition period, during which contractors will be able to continue using CMMC 1.0, but will also be able to adopt some of the new features and requirements of CMMC 2.0.

Overall, CMMC 2.0 represents a significant update and expansion of the CMMC framework and is designed to provide contractors with a more flexible and efficient way to meet the cybersecurity requirements of DoD contracts.
